OK I'm officially a liar, I bought a PS3 anyway. Even though I said down with the evil empire etc. Dunno what I think, so far I don't think I'm too impressed.

So far I've only used it to play 1 game, Resistance Fall of Man, which is a fun game and looks nice. But something about it doesn't feel right. It's crisp, fast, pretty but the level of detail is less than what I would expect. It's too "clean" of a destroyed city.

The desktop from what I've seen of it is krap compared to the 360 (my bro says its like the PSP menu). And I haven't even set up my internet "marketplace" stuff yet.

I've watched some normal DVD's on it, I output through HDMI and it looks pretty good. I played some old Chuck Norris movies and I think the quality might be better than the HDMI on my upconvert DVD player (haven't officially compared as the HDMI cable was from DVD player and I only have the 1 input).

So I can't give a 100% fair thumbs up or thumbs down as I only scratched the surface of what it can do. But from what I've experienced so far, I'd say the purchase is a thumbs down. I'm digging the 360 much more right now.

I read somewhere that if you hook the thing up to an older TV it will dumb the graphics down. In some cases it is dumbing them down way more than it should and leaving you with inferior graphics.

I don't see the point. Same lame control gimmick as the Wii and double the price. And with few exclusives to make it worth buying.

360 is getting Alan Wake, Halo 3 and Postal 3. 3 reasons alone to own the system.

Wii is getting... well, Mario and other franchise titles, which have been run dry of ideas(it was one thing when their mascot, who dresses in red and blue, got a cape and started flying... now their red and blue-suited mascot sticks to walls). Smash Bros... who cares. Fighting games are all the same boring thing anyway. It's sad when their selection of VC titles generates more interest. Nah, I'll stick to ROM downloads. And I'm sorry, but if you're not a gamer then too bad. Don't ruin it for those of us who LIKE standard controls.

PS3 gets... another Metal Gear Stupid adventure(which will no doubt include Kojima interviews wherein he says things so stupid he mades Dubya look intellectual). And PS1 purchase downloads... to play on the PSP. Which took someone only days to crack the emulator to play copied games.

Did anyone actually have enough confidence in Sony, or MS, or Nintendo, to expect any of them to release new hardware and have the same number of titles at launch as the competing platform has a year after their launch?

Is there some glitch in peoples memories where the 360 launch was heralded by angles with golden trumpets, virgins showered Best Buy with rose petals, and publishes had hundreds of flawless titles that pushed the 360's potential to the max...all ready at launch?

I find it odd that MS get's ragged on so much in the software market but in the console market they apparently exemplify what/where the industry should be.

Well like I say, can't really give a fair review on the PS3 yet, right now was it worth the money? Nah.

I'm much more satisfied with 360 #4 and what I can do with it. I really dig the 360 controllers, the games I'm currently playing, the arcade games etc. And the desktop for the 360 is so much nicer.

Eventually though, I do plan on starting to check out these Blueray DVD movies and possibly get a PSP and fool around with it.

Need to hold off on the big (ha like a PSP is big after buying a PS3?) purchases though, gonna be moving into my apartment. Need to buy furniture etc. (and a 51" lcd TV)

oh Ditto and as for graphics, dunno I thought I had a 720 TV supposedly I'm running my PS3 at 1080i.

I don't have a PS3, but in general terms...

The console would have no way of detecting what type of display you are using.  Analog video cables are unidirectional.  There are two ways it would be able to know:  the user can tell it via config settings or it can detect what type of cables are connected to it (there are a couple of different ways to do this but they all likely come down to simple continuity checks on the AV port pins).  What that means is that if you have an old TV and are using composite you will get the same signal as you would get with a brand new plasma also using composite.  Now the TV could do different things with it but the source signal will be the same.  Same deal with S Video or Component... the console should be able to detect the cable type being used and it is possible the console can adjust the output signal accordingly.

This crap is going to become far more commonplace before it starts to go away.  Too many resolutions, too much variation in TVs, not enough flexibility in software and/or playing devices.

Welcome to the site!

And I'd have to say that all along, I think I've been more interested in the 20GB model of the PS3.  I don't think I need all that much space on my machine, and besides, I can update the drive later.  I don't need wireless or card readers or wireless internet.  Most of my media could be streamed.

Too bad it seems like they're discontinuing the model.  I can't find it anywhere but eBay.

$500 is STILL a heck of a lot to pay for a game machine though - Blu Ray or not.  I really threw a fit when I found out that the 360 was going to be $400.
