Added a "User Badge" at the top of the screen!  Updated/Updating the Game page! People can now submit news stories anonymously! Several other enhancements to the news page have been made as well (many are "behind the scenes"). Fixed the "Edit My Profile" page today (12/21). Major update today (12/18) - the system page looks a lot more like a portal than a hardware info screen. Nifty effects have been added!

I've updated the look of the site. The New search engine is done! I'll post any updates that I'm working on in this thread, so that you know what to expect in the near future.

Today, I'm working on Search. The new search will be much faster than the old, it will have a search box on more pages, and it'll make more sense when you search on something.

After I finish up search, I'm likely to re-theme the site.

This morning, I finished the basic elements of the new search engine.  It's far more functional and way faster than the old search engine.

One of the things that it'll let me do is post a search box on pretty much every page of the site.

It's not really "decorated" yet, though (the search results page, that is)

I'll be posting it some time today or tonight.

Then, the content drought ends...

Well, I've added the search engine - it's not "completely done" in that I want to display the game picture next to the game (if a picture exists)...

It's good enough to provide good results though, and it's reasonably fast.

Holy crap, I just did a search, and in less than a second, I got results from 6 areas of the site.

For anyone keeping track, that's 3 times faster than the old search, and 5 more areas searched at a time.  See, the difference is...  on my test system, I could tell it was quick, but it's so much quicker now that it's on the site.

I'm happy now.

The upcoming look / feel update will put a search box on every single page.

Now that's spiffy. I searched Burning Rangers, and it came up with the game, the review, and even a feature I did that includes BR.

Speaking of which, after doing so much research for the holidays, I'd like to update my "5 Essential Items" piece with 360, PS3, and Wii editions....

I've updated the look and feel of much of the site.  The rest will come before the end of the day.

This should look OK in Internet Explorer 7 as well as Internet Explorer 6.

I've tested this in two versions of Firefox and one version of Opera as well.  It has also been tested on Linux (FireFox).

Thanks. With this update, I hope to wind down the programming, and get back into content creation.

My programming will really fall into the "tweak" category - making things run smoother...  And programming at a slower pace.

I'll be doing more design work as I move down the line...  Making the main page look like less of a mess, for example.

I like the new layout quite a bit, but I'm not sure about the red and yellow bars on the top and bottom. They remind me of McDonald's.

Maybe you've already got this planned, but I would move the Game of the Moment back up, since I don't know if people would plan on scrolling down to read them, they're more noticable up at the top.

Wow, man. Big changes up on the Stage Selizzle. Much to discuss. I hung around on Skype last night, but you were offline. I gotta talk w/ you tonight if possible, though- my current lack of a job has freed up my nights pretty well....

Yeah, last night I was taking a break. I've put in a lot of hours at work and been doing a lot on the site (I was up till 2am the other day, and getting up at 6am... so, this represents a lot of work), and I just needed to watch Heroes with the wife and chill to get centered. Obviously, that's why the main page of the site still looks like hell and doesn't have any new content. My new "Main Page" for the site is done, however - it's just not posted. It's quite the difference from what it looked like before. I think it looks super, but I'm vain.

I do hope that your "much to discuss" is positive - like suggestions for the game page, or the system pages... design stuff that I can do something about, rather than "you know, your design sucks".... Which, you know, makes me cry.

*Three* Games of the Moment now? That's cool, especially since they all seem to be with different systems, so far!

Yeah, it's not "fully baked" yet, hence the 3 games of the moment. But I want to have the most recent review in the first box and maybe two random picks from the database.

It's also an element that I have to spend just a touch more time coding, because I need to make sure that I can "theme" it. It'll probably be done tomorrow. I was anxious to get something out there in the mean time.

PS - I know that I need a direct link to the Private Messaging "inbox".  I have something special planned for that type of stuff, and I hope to have that ready within the next few days.

A big update has been posted to the system screen.  It's getting a LOT closer to what I thought the system screen should have been in the first place.

I'm probably not done toying with it, because I also want to add something about the forum onto the page (so that strangers have an opportunity to talk about their favorite games / systems more easily)

Features on the system page:
  • Big picture (random) - if there's even one game picture for the system, a large picture will show up at the very top of the screen.
  • Review box - if there are 3 or more reviews for the system, 3 are randomly chosen, and displayed like they are on the main page.
  • Latest Headlines - I display the latest 5 headlines for stories which mention the system in question.
  • Games - here's a nifty little display...  When you first enter the game screen, you're presented with the first 20 games for the system.  Like the old game screen, you're then allowed the option of filtering by letters of the alphabet.  It's really cool because it doesn't refresh the whole screen when you click on the letter you want to filter by.
  • Tech Info - this is all of the stuff you're probably used to seeing.

I've updated the "Edit Your Profile" page.

It now identifies your current Avatar, more easily allowing you to keep your current avatar. I've tested the Sig and Bio sections to be sure they save OK, and they do.

Oh, it's no biggie, I'm not a big poster or anything, it was more along the lines of an observation rather than anything else.

I'm working on the new "Add A News Story" page. This will allow anonymous news posting, and for authenticated users will use the same login system as the forum.

Another update applied to the system configuration for the site - Firefox should behave a lot more like Internet Explorer as a result.  You may notice some visual elements (like some buttons) have "changed into links."

2 quick updates to the Games page:

1.  There's now a spot for us to promote...  whatever we want.  We're currently promoting the Genesis week, and directing people to the main page of the site.

2.  If a game has any news stories associated with it, we're displaying those.

This is the beginning of some larger changes for that page.  Looking at the popularity of that page (relative to other things on the site), and looking at how well that page has drawn people to the "Ask the Community" section (about 400 questions a month or so), pixelSHREDDER and I think that we'll be more able to expand the community by offering more areas of interaction there - so...  We'll be linking the forums in, and a couple of other nice things.

Look for more changes over the next several days.

The game page has been updated (again)... If you mention a particular game title in the forum, it'll now show up in the game's page. I also fixed a bug that I introduced with the previous update.  ALSO - if a picture for a game exists, I present that picture toward the top of the screen.

PS - this is a SERIOUS integration of the forum engine with the site engine - something that just wouldn't have been possible before (mostly due to licensing, but also because of versioning).

Nice.  I'm going to have to poke around with that.  Maybe start talking about the Vectrex more.

Does it track by number of posts mentioning a title or number of mentions (i.e. if I say Minestorm 5 times in one post, does that count as 5 hits)

I've updated again. This time you'll probably notice that there's a little 'user badge' at the top of the screen. If it's looking a bit odd, press refresh on your browser, because I had to update the CSS and sometimes that gets cached by your browser.

Another question - what about a game that appears multiple times in the database, like Centipede (which is probably out there for most platforms by now)?

OK. To answer chadtower's questions:, using the fictional game title "Nada":

Rule 1: If the forum gets TOO cross-linked, I can change these rules. The rules are built to try to link as many topics as possible right now.

If you post about "Nada", it'll hit on that game screen. If "Nada" is a PS2 game and a PS3 game, it'll hit on both (all) versions.

If you post about "Nada" that post will hit on the game screen for "Nada 3".

If you post "Nada" 5 times in the same post, that's 1 hit.

If you post "Nada" in 5 posts in the same thread, that's 5 hits. (for now, this one might change quickly depending on how saturated threads get).

PS - I haven't decided yet, but I MIGHT create a game thread for every game in the database (just script it out and dump in the topics).  I also might look at the traffic, and create topics for our most popular searches.  I'm hesitant to do that because ideally, I'd like discussions to flow naturally.

So, this 'week', I'm working on the following:

1.  Wii Week coming up.
2.  Adding the News Cast to the menu (pop up the player window)
3.  More news casts...

AND what I think you'll like -
4.  Re-arranging the forum's main page.  At a minimum, I'll be putting the latest posts at the top.

I've made several improvements to the RSS feed. The RSS feed for the podcast is now called "Another Level - The Stage Select Podcast Feed". I've updated the description, etc.

Also, I've updated the forum's RSS feed. The forum's RSS feed will now "jump" you to the post that is listed in the feed, rather than just taking you to the page.  At the end of the forum's RSS feed, you'll get links to the major forums.

The forum threads have been updated to allow you to jump around... Basically, it's just HTML bookmarks, but there you go.

I've updated the main page of the forum again. For right now, all I've really been doing is re-ordering and breaking out of tables. Stuff like that. It's little 2 second changes here and there when I get time. Hopefully, I'll have a better look/feel in a bit.

AND FINALLY...

I'm in the middle of evaluating pixelSHREDDER's "Atari 2600" theme. There are one or two little changes that I'll need to make to the site to accomodate the theme... Then, I have to add themes to your user profile. So, there are a few things that I'll have to do before I can release it to the world.

Something to keep in mind, I might've forgotten to mention it- the switch next to the news tab is meant to be used next to the other 2 tabs, as well.... I didn't add it because I realized it might make it difficult to integrate; but if the switch can be added in, then it should be included in every tab

Just an FYI - I'm spending a bit of time updating the administration tools for the site.

This is a change that you guys won't be able to see - sorry about that.  However, most of the site has "grown up", except for the admin tools - I really need to spend a bit of time updating them so that I can provide everyone better service.

I'll be re-theming the site again soon to be more Wii friendly.  Looking at the current design and the 2600 design that's based on the current design on the Wii is a real chore.  Navigation should be simplified...  I may ask for you to test things out to help me...

HELLO!

You're about to see some major changes to the site.  These changes will take some of the features of the site off-line for a while.  One of the major features that will be unavailable for a little bit may be the forums.

I want you to know something up front about these changes...

This change can be considered a "reboot".  I'm looking at what makes Stage Select work, and what makes it fail, and organization of content is a major issue for the site.  But many of the features that I mention above really make it work - so those features will still be there.
