In case anyone forgot the game collecting roots of Stage Select, I'm resurrecting the New Aquisitions page for the new forums. It's just a place to brag about the latest game-related swag you got from that garage sale, or thrift store, or off a homeless man at knifepoint.... whatever the case may be.

First acquisition:

Scored at the thrist store the other day. Found a Commodore Vic-20 in-box (well, the half of the box with all the good stuff printed on it, anyway), wires, joystick, and a cassette player attachment. Also found 2 NES controllers with Turbo buttons (they looked 1st party; didn't know Nintendo made ones like that) and a PC DDR pad on the cheap ($4). Oh yeah, and some NES carts:

TMNT: Manhattan Project

Kirby's Adventure

Super Dodgeball

Grand total of around 36 bucks. All said, a good day. Sadly, this day was a Friday, which probably should've been spent less closet-nerdily... ah well, there's always next week..

Picked up a Messiah Generation NEX console the other day and copies of Skate or Die, Skate or Die 2, and Xexyz to play on it.

Interesting, I was considering picking one up, but was told that its emulation was no better or worse than any other NES-clone, so I didn't.

I actually am a bit jealous though, because the wireless controllers are supposed to be cool.

Can you get those without buying the system?

I'm sure eBay can accomodate.

On another note, I found out the hard way that you can't change the title of a discussion after the fact. So, the New Acquisitions discussion will forever be misspelled....

Thrift store bounty:

Saturn: A.M.O.K., Manx TT (I WANTED this game so bad back in the day), Command & Conquer, Madden '97, Hi-Octane, Striker '96, Thunder Strike

Dreamcast Generator Vol. 2

NES: Metroid

Genesis: ToeJam & Earl (in box w/ manual), TJ&E 2 (in box w/ manual, but cart inside was SOR 2- no biggie, I'll pick it up loose), Kid Chameleon (cart-only), Sonic the Hedgehog (in box w/ manual)

Atari 2600: Space Invaders, Skyjinks, Freeway, Combat (loose carts)

Totaled out to around 60 bucks

"Interesting, I was considering picking one up, but was told that its emulation was no better or worse than any other NES-clone, so I didn't."

Yeah, I can tell that the sound is just slightly not right on Skate or Die 2, but everything I've tried in it fired up first try, which is really nice.

"I actually am a bit jealous though, because the wireless controllers are supposed to be cool.

I was kind of disappointed to find out that they did not have the wireless controllers at the store I went to. You can get them seperately from their website, but they won't work on a classic NES as the receiver is inside the NEX. The controllers are also pretty small, and I haven't really decided if they're too small. Thankfully, it's compatible with my NES Advantage so I can use that if my hands start to cramp up.

Don't bother buying one Chris, I have an extra one floating around some place. I'll send it to you once I get to that "area".

As for the wireless controllers. They're sorta of meh, for games like Super Mario they suck. They're not precise enough, you'll end up running off ledges etc. And they will work on normal NES, you have to plug a little thingy in the controller slot. You can also buy them on their website (playmessiah.com I think it was).

The controllers are all right for shooters, like 1942 etc.

There is a list on their website of supported games, you can get a much better NES-clone. The sound in most games is atrocious. In fact I picked one up for $45 that is supposed to rock and play everything. Sadly enough I haven't even tried it.

Yet another thrift store score:

NES: TMNT II, Rygar, Karnov, Goonies II, Double Dragon III, WM: Steel Cage Challenge

Genesis: Dr. Robotnik's MBM (case & manual), Streets of Rage (case & manual), Super Wrestlemania (case), Harball III (box & manual) World Series Baseball '98, and a Genny controller (w/ turbo buttons)

N64: Mario Party, Mario Golf, Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2

Total: 70 bucks.More than I thought like a punch in the gut, but still nice finds.

Finally working on my Resident Evil titles for Gamecube. Picked up the 1st and 3rd.

Also nabbed me a Zelda Ocarina for Gamecube. Payed used EB game prices, but they were complete and used the 10% card so I don't think it was too bad.

Got an outrageous bid on something that I'm really excited about as well. I'll let you know when auctions ends :)

Picked up Bully after hearing the rave reviews.

Got the Collectors Edition for b50 bucks; it's easily the coolest CE for a game ever. Get this, they threw in an official Bully dodgeball, along with a comic and sticker, all packaged in a nifty collector's box.

I don't know.  Granted Bully is a newish idea, the storyline sounds...boring.

It's good, but not perfect.  Specifically, while the pointer functions are very sensitive, the accelerometer functions can sometimes be not sensitive enough.

More soon.

Hey JR- maybe you'd consider whipping up a review of the NEX, give readers some of your impressions?

I've been strongly toying with the idea of taking that receiver out of a NEX and putting it into a real NES.  I'd do it this week if I could find an NES that actually worked 100% to make it worth doing.

Very happy about this one.  Picked up a Fathom (pinball) last night.

(can't paste in a url in Firefox and the URL insert dialog isn't working either... no response to any of the buttons.  Head to www.ipdb.org and look up Fathom for an example of the pin)

This thread should get pretty interesting as I get my stuff re-purchased via insurance...

So far, I have a 360, the HD-DVD drive, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, 5 HD-DVDs.
My wife got an iPod Touch (it's super cool), and we've ordered a pretty killer laptop.  Too bad the laptop is going to be delivered in late Feb.

I've been fairly busy getting things lately, recently I went to a church sale and picked up (all for the NES): Excitebike, Roger Clemens MVP Baseball, 1943, Superspike V'Ball, and Blades of Steel for $1 each. All of them had their manuals and were in their boxes with sharp corners. A couple of them still had their hang-tags on them.

Other than that I've been hitting my local used video game stores and grabbed a few more (loose) NES games: Wizardry, Wizardry 2, Wizards & Warriors 3, Snake Rattle 'N' Roll, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Ghoul School, Rockin' Kats, Super Team Games (with a Power Pad).

On top of all that, my sister cleaned out her collection of old NES games and I scored BurgerTime, Rainbow Islands, and some weird 42-in-one cartridge.

On the PC front, I've been hitting my local Target pretty much weekly, as they've been putting a couple of games on clearance with a fair bit of regularity. Some of the deals I've gotten out there lately include: Enemy Territory Quake Wars for $10, Heroes of Might and Magic 5: Tribes of the East for $8, Neverwinter Nights 2 for $14, Medieval 2 Total War and its expansion for $7.50 each, Jericho for $7.50, Universe at War: Earth Assault for $13, and the King's Quest Collection for $5.

Another place that I have been hitting recently is Big Lots, of all places. Over there I've managed to find (for PC) Psychonauts, Thief 2, and Tomb Raider 2 for $6 each, and the 'collector's edition' combo pack of City of Heroes + City of Villains for $10.

Now I'm thinking I need to take about a six month vacation to play 'em all.

Haven't gotten any recent acquisitions, but this thread brought me back to the day that I got Super Mario 3. I managed to get my own copy for $4 from a garage sale down the street. The only downside is that it didn't come with the original box. But the cartridge and manual were and still are in mint condition.

MotorStorm
Fight Night Round 3 (PS3)
Unreal Tournament 3 (PS3)

I've been busy.  That doesn't even include downloadables or PC games!

  • Rainbow Six Vegas 2
  • Folklore

Vegas turned into a snipe game towards the end.  One of those things were the difficulty got to where some guy with a shotgun could drop you with a headshot from 300 yards away.

Folklore bored me.

I'm thinking of picking up Wild Arms 5 (PS2) to play until the PS3 library expands some more.  Not that it is small now but nothing is jumping out at me...except maybe the new Metal Gear.

Vegas on PS3, yes.

My PS3 library is currently limited to the above,  Stranglehold, and Motorstorm.  I haven't been gaming much lately.  Haven't had the time.  I did pull my Atari 800XL out of storage the other day and played around with that some.

I am thinking of getting Spore though, once I get my new laptop RAM installed.  The RAM should be here by Monday.

Well, my user ID on the PS3 is larsoncc, but I don't know how much action I get on that system, all told =(

I do have MotorStorm, so we should hook up on that some time!  Do you have a BlueTooth headset? (I'd have to look to see if I have one)  ALSO - GameFly is selling UT 3 for $16.19.  I think it's worth that...

I totally hear ya on game time - it's pretty insane with me, lately.  All that I've had time for is a little bit of Halo, some Serious Sam II, and that's about it.

I bought a "PS3/PS2 Memory Card Adapter" over the weekend.  It was a pretty easy process.  I liked how it created seperate virutal PS1 cards when it found one on the PS2 card.  However, now I don't know why I would ever need the thing again.  I still have the receipt and the box and am thinking it might be worth the hassle of taking it back for an exchange.

Once I got everything done I played a few hours of the original Mercenaries.

I ended up trading my Geometry Wars to larsoncc for Smash Brothers Brawl. Both awesome games, but I got too pissed too quickly at Geometry Wars. My suckiness may have been a small factor.

Not exactly "new", more like "old stuff in a new package", as I picked up the Retro Arcade Pac-Man today :) I'll have a review for it next week once the digital camera returns from being out of town so I can take a few pics.  It comes with Pac-Man, Pac & Pal, Pac-Man Plus, Super Pac-Man, Pole Position, Galaga, Dig Dug, Bosconian, New Rally-X, Galaxian, Xevious and Mappy.  As I've checked out everything except for Pole Position, I'll probably give it an 8 out of 10, not much was screwed up, only one game was (Xevious) ,a few elements are off on other games (Galaxian) and sounds are off on a few others.  I'd say it's worth it's only $18 price tag though.

Update of the above with a video that can be seen here:

www.youtube.com/watch

The video footage isn't good, since I don't have a camera, but some of it I took from MAME though, since I had a few of the game ROMs.  It's a full 10 minutes long though.  I'll eventually redo it in a much shorter version eventually once I get a camera and just do quick game footage.

I stopped in the Goodwill on the way out from the place we were having lunch today.

River City Ransom - Boxed/Complete, even the instructions are in the plastic wrap.  It would have been mint if it didn't have the damned $5 price sticker on it and still had the plastic.

I also got 4 or 5 other NES titles in the same shape that I didn't already have or recognize.  I'll post those when I get home.

They had a complete N64 system in pretty good shape that I passed up after I saw the games.  They also had a couple of loose NES titles that I didn't bother with.

UPDATE:

  • A Boy And His Blob
  • Rollerball
  • To The Earth
  • Stealth ATF
  • Battletank
  • Star Soldier

Went to my local flea market a couple of weekends ago and found a few Japanese imports for my Dreamcast:

  • Phantasy Star Online
  • Street Fighter 3: W Impact
  • Capcom vs. SNK Millenneum Fight 2000 Pro

All for $40, which was a little pricey. But Japanese Dreamcast games are apparently pretty rare around here (this is the first time I've seen them in the wild), so I jumped on it. And, bonus, the Street Figher games are actually pretty good.

Never mentioned it...  But I'm on Xbox 360 #4 now.  This one's an Elite.  Here's hoping it won't die.
