OK guys, I just got screwed hard. My Xbox 360 just failed catastrophically. I'm 16 days outside the warranty. Cost is approximately $125 to get it fixed.

Here's what I discovered in my rantings with Microsoft. If you foam at the mouth long enough, even though they say there's nothing they can do about the cost. A supervisor can give you like a 25% discount, so it ends up being about $100 to get your 360 fixed. That includes shipping both ways. Unfortunately the overnight shippings are gone (even if it was still under warranty), so your looking 3-5 business days to get the box and 8-10 business days to get it back after they get it. So I'm estimating I'll be without for about a month.

Then over and over all the asshole reps I talked to plead with me to get the $30 a year warranty. Since this will be the second time I've shipped a 360 back to them (first was the launch one which I sent a couple of weeks after buying), it looks like the $30 a year is a good deal for the shitty quality M$ product.

Maybe I just got unlucky? But my thoughts are this day in age a product of this "quality" should not fail so often, and def not just outside its warranty. My ancient gaming systems are working fine. Inluding my launch PS2. One should not be forced into paying extended warranties for modern eletronics.

I'm going to keep everyone updated but I plan on looking into class action lawsuits, I recommend if you have a 360 buy the extended warranty for a year for $30 before your warranty runs out (new unit or refurbed is 90 days).

$30 a year is utterly outrageous. An extra $30 for something around the same price, electronics-wise, can usually get you a three to five year extended warranty, although that's generally speaking, it depends on what it is. Screw Microsoft.

Wow, that sucks.  Sometimes, I wonder if I got lucky with my 360 because I haven't had any issues, or if I'm the most common scenario, and you got unlucky.

There sure seem to be a lot of people with 360 hardware issues.

Yep I don't like the  fact I have to pay $30 either, but I'd rather pay $30x3 and have it covered for 3 years than "chance it" like I did previously and pay $100 16 days after the warranty runs out. Normally I don't do warranties as most stuff made these days you get some life outa it.

Yeah Chris, if you're still under the 90 day warranty I'd look into plopping down the $30 for the 1 year. It was sudden, I downloaded a patch for Call of Duty then when it loaded up it died then it progressively got worse with loading to the point now i get the 3 outa 4 red lights and nada. All this happened in 2 days.

My system is well ventilated and I don't feel that I abuse it, so go figure.

Well I have a new (another refurbished unit) 360 woo hoo. Had it for about a week now, so far *fingers crossed* no problems. Still have to send my nasty letter to M$. I doubt it will do anything, maybe it will let me sleep better.

Yep lars,

>>> They're even going to refund the few folks who've already shelled out the cash for the repairs. Sweet!

I was refunded in full for my "out of warranty" repairs. Was nice for M$ to own up to their mistakes. Definately earned more of my respect. I think I'm a M$ consumer now, f%#@ Sony I'm done with them.

OK, Xbox 360 just gave me the lights of death. I'm practically done with Microsoft. This time I'm 4 days outside warranty, they won't help me at all because I told them I was using that stupid Intercooler fan (of course that's what shorted it out).

Tried to tell the dumb cunt it didn't short, because I was able to get it started again and then it froze on log in screen. I wasn't even gonna get the discount on this repair so I cursed at her until they hung up on me.

So I did research on the internet, basically I'm just going to wait long enough before people figure out what makes these things tick. Then I'll tear it apart and do maintenance on it like the PS2.

OK got it working again last night here's some things I used from other websites:

1) Let it cool down, waited like 5-8 hours.

2) Suspended the power block in the air to allow it to cool better (wtf looks moronic)

3) Plugged it directly into outlet, no more power strips.

So far seems to be working dunno if its coincidence or not. This is first time I've had problems with #4, also after trying to play it standing up, the cd tray started sticking. I'm using it flat again. And remember plug in fan didn't seem to prevent the 3 lights.

I should make a video of me smashing it to pieces.

That's so nuts.  I've never had a lick of trouble with my launch unit, nor has my brother, my buddy in St Louis, or my other buddies here.

You've been through TWO now?

PS - you know that Nyko has said that if their cooler trashes your 360, they'll replace it??  They just announced that 2 weeks ago.

Either MS is intentionally buying cheap parts, or their supplier is screwing them.

But we've already heard problems with those Wii straps breaking(which doesn't surprise me... the part that holds the strap on is rather thin), and I've seen a few reports of Wiis just dying(granted, Nintendo fanboys are very good baout making sure things liek that don't really get out... even the DS and SP have dead pixels bad enough but you never hear of it). It'll be soon we hear of PS3s frying or something.

Seriously, it's like this gen is made of whatever junk they can get.

My Super Nintendo had a broken wire on the power supply.
My GameCube had a broken wire in one of the controllers (the rumble would only work some of the time).
My Platinum GBA SP has a dead pixel.
I tossed my original GBA into a canvas tote bag and the Start and Select buttons wore off.

The rest of their stuff has been pretty good to me, though.

oh btw, attempted to respond to this thread like 5 times now at work, and kept getting what I believe was the anti spammer. Nope this is the 4th 360. And anyway it seems to be working again, I bought another Nyko cooler, this one has no on-off switch. I plan on using that one.

Told Nyko about my problem and my first cooler possibly defective even though I think its just faulty 360, they want me to send cooler in. So we'll see.

Don't know if I mention in other posts, tried playing it standing up, didn't seem to really do anything other than when I played it normally again CD drive started sticking. That seems to be working correctly now too. So basically I have to roll the dice every tie I want to play 360.

I've lost interest in it and I'm back on World of Warcraft. Grinding honor to get PVP gear.

Aye, I saw that. Hopefully I don't have a "do not help this customer" listed next to my info. I was kind of rude to the person "helping" me. I was a little angry.

Unfortunately my gaming has to take a back seat, I'm punishing myself to get some real life shit done. Stuff I've been putting off for way too long. As of now I'm done with the games. Been a day and a half and I'm already going through withdrawals.

Sometimes need drastic measures.. we shall see!
