Yes, everyone loves GoldenEye. Yes, Super Mario 3 will forever live in our hearts. But one conversation I always love having revolves around lesser-known games that have broken through the boundaries of bigger named brands. Regardless of platform, what games have you folks encountered that really stand out, yet haven't received the public praise they deserve? We'd love to hear why you like them and/or recommend them to the rest of the community.

Some of my favorites include:

Galaxy 5000 (NES)

Monster Party (NES)

M.C. Kids (NES)

more as I think of them...

I just got done playing through Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon, which was really good. I was pleasantly surprised since I hadn't even heard of the thing until I saw it in the store and it piqued my interest.

Hmm...I'll have to take a look at that. I've never been able to sit through a Final Fantasy title, much less most RPGs. The original Phantasy Star is one of the few gamse I can actually recall from start to finish.

Chocobo's Dungeon is more of a roguelike than an actual Final Fantasy game, so it's definitely a niche title.

I should also include both StarTropics and Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II. Two NES games that most definitely deserved more appreciation than most gamers gave them.

Flashback: The Quest For Identity for Sega Genesis. I got it a long time ago, don't remember where from. It's a great game, and I encourage anyone with a working Genesis to get it and try it out. It's probably like $5 now. Anyway, it's a side-scrolling platform game that takes place in the year 2142. It's about a Galaxia Bureau of Investigation agent named Conrad who attempts to stop an alien invasion of Earth. In doing so, he is kidnapped by the aliens and has his memory erased. Fortunately, our hero feared this would happen and hid his memory in an electronic/mechanical device called a holocube, from which he may rediscover his identity and mission. After escaping from the aliens, Conrad finds himself stranded on the Planet Titan, where he must find the holocube and carry out his mission to save Earth. And that's where you, the player, come in. You bounce around from planet to planet solving puzzles and shooting aliens in an attempt to destroy the aliens before they take over Earth. That's it in a nutshell. It may sound simplistic, but keep in mind it's old as hell. Besides, the gameplay is fun and, in my opinion, addictive.

Never heard of it, but I'll have to check it out. Genesis seems to lack a lot of addictive games. It has lots of GOOD games, but not many I can immediately recall that I would want to play over and over. One of the more popular multiplayer experiences was the port of the Revolution X arcade game. It's an on-the-rails shooter built around Aerosmith. Ending the description there warrents a four star rating, but I will go on.

You get to shot at endless waves of soldiers on your quest to rescue each member of the band. You can fire your normal weapon which has unlimited ammo, or you can hurl exploding CDs at them with the secondary fire. Causing more damage gets you more points and uncovers more CDs and hidden items. It's a true formula for chaos, which is why it always kept my interest when friends wanted to play. It's also one of the earlier games I can recall that has multiple routes through levels based on your progress and/or choice of direction.

Flashback is awesome, and it's the sequel to Out of This World.  Great rotoscoped animation (I think that's the technique used).

The Aerosmith game is awful, as is the Crue Ball game based on Motley Crue.  For that matter, the Moonwalker game was ALSO not good.

Everyone says Crue Ball was good, so I would like whatever they're smoking...

Now, are we saying that an "Underdog Game" is one that people haven't played, or ones that didn't sell well, or what?

I mean, many critics like Rez and Ico, matching both criteria above, but there are also a ton of games which didn't review well which have a special place in peoples' hearts.  Many (poor) Genesis games fit into this category for me.

I tried playing Out Of This World, and the graphics were pretty amazing for the time, but I just couldn't get into it.

I'm actually surprised that nobody's mentioned Zombies Ate My Neighbors or Shatterhand yet. Every time I come across a thread like this those two games almost always get brought up. I played them both, and they're nothing special, or even very good at all, really.

Even though I didn't care for them, I'd classify both of those as underdog games since one that not many people played or heard of or played them for one reason or another.

Like Nightshade, awesome game, even made the cover of Nintendo Power one month, but next to nobody seems to have heard of it. Or Ico, which by all accounts was pretty good, but it sold poorly (or so I understand) so it's pretty rare now.

Yeah, I've had a few shining moments with Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Never got fully into it, but the atmosphere reminded me of Maniac Mansion for some reason. Probably playing as the sexy teen running through the creapy neighborhood settings
