LATEST - Changed front page of forum. Changed discussion page.  "Sort By" box is now for logged in users only. Re-Ordered main page of forum, more changes to come. Fixed a "Create a Discussion" bug. Private Messaging is now enabled! You'll get a red notification if you have new messages.

This will be the main thread that I post updates to the forum software. EDIT - This will be my main status post.

Status:
  • Main page, discussions page, and thread page are done.
  • Legacy forum browsing is done.
  • Editing / Deleting posts are done.
  • Anonymous Posting is enabled with spam protection. Additionally, I can turn off anonymous posting very easily if it ever becomes an issue, even for a day.
  • Registration is done.
  • Quoting is done.
  • Voting is done.
  • The "Comments in this thread" box is "sticky". It remembers what comment threshold you want.
  • Sorting is done.
  • Improvements to the Discussions.aspx are done.
  • Old Forum removed from the site.
  • RSS Feed for forum posts done.
  • Log in link on each forum page.
  • Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethru, Subscript, and Superscript buttons now all "work" in the WYSIWYG editor.
  • Private Messaging is done!
  • Search
I'm going to delete most of my comments in this thread, and make the top comment the most current descriptor of what's going on...

To Do:
  • Annual user "culling" - if you're a user that attempted to register for the site, but never successfully joined, this process will remove you from the database, and you'll be able to try again. The last iteration of this removed hundreds of "dead" users.
  • Data Binding so that you don't have to click a link to see your post.
Information:

So, here are the current rules of Voting on comments:
  1. Only members of Stage Select can vote.
  2. You can only vote once on a comment. Even Admins.
  3. You can only vote Administrators UP. I don't want the admin comments buried. I may change this rule later, depending on feedback. Let me know.
  4. You can't vote on your own comment.
  5. Mods still have the power to delete blatant spam, or kill a comment based on vote abuse ("stealth edits" - getting voted up then editing in some spam). I discourage them from deleting comments... Let's see how this system works for a while.
  6. All posts start at 0 votes. Everyone is equal until proven otherwise!!

Don't know if it's in the queue or not, but I'd find a quote button for the forums pretty handy.

Logging in and out from the admin section to the main site esta much annoying. Can anything be done about it?

Speaking of, I noticed when I was messing with the Ask the Community, in like a 10 min span I had to log in like 4 times. (some of it was admin areas). Any chance we can make that last a little longer? I understand security but on the same note it stinks to edit something then hit the "go" button only to have it rejected as I'm not logged in.

Ironically I'm still logged into main site now overnight :)

The eventuality is that we'll remove the "old" login system.  It doesn't work well, and was a "hidden" complaint of many users.

I've made pretty good progress toward that goal. Almost all of the games pages, almost all of the system pages, and now even the forum pages use the new system.

But I'm nowhere near done yet.

Hell, I spent all morning programming a registration page, and I'm not even half done with it yet.

Ugh, so much needs to be done / worked on.

I think it looks really good, only complaint I have. Why is it when I enter a message, then submit it. It re-freshes the page, yet then I have to click a link to refresh it again to see my message. Couldn't it just refresh to the page with my message in it? I'm sure there's a reason...

I'll be honest - I was looking for the Quick Win (tm), so I just accepted a few silly things that .NET likes to do.

The whole "press this to refresh the thread" thing - that's the default behavior of ASP.NET.  Buttons are processed AFTER controls are populated on a page.  So, I've already put the thread into the page by the time I save your comment.

There's also the fact that between button presses, ASP.NET remembers what you typed last time.

The issue isn't permanent - Programmatically speaking, I can populate the thread again after a button submit and force a clear on the text box.

Like this?

I'm testing quoting, should be up later today.

Things on my to do list, in the near-term future:
  • User Registration DONE
  • Email Activation DONE
  • Activation Page DONE
  • Edit Profile page (yes, at long last, you'll be able to edit your Bio). DONE
  • Quoting
  • Private Messaging
  • Ajax Voting Buttons (?)
  • Eliminate ALL old forum pages from the site. DONE
  • EDIT - I'm adding "polls" to this list, and I've got a neat way to do them... We already have voting enabled, so a special Sort box is all that we'll need to enable voting. Yeah buddy! DONE
Then I can start to think of all the other work to be done. Woo.

Sorry you haven't seen much from me lately.

So, not only have I enabled quoting and nested quoting, I've enabled quoting multiple people seamlessly in 1 post.

Very cool. I like what I'm seeing.

New message notification is now sprinkled throughout the site, and I've also corrected all the links in the Collections area of the site.

The following pages (for now) will notify you if you have new PMs:
  • All forum pages
  • login
  • edit profile
  • gamecollection
  • cookie swap

ALSO - I made the Collections area of the site mildly faster (I don't know if it's even noticable, the section is due for an overhaul... again!).

I added the very basic start of a keyword filter.  I'm looking into an anti-spam service to end the spam issue, but this filter might provide a bit of relief.

I added a secondary filtering system.  It should also provide a decent amount of relief...

I changed the main forum page, but just a bit.  All I really did is re-order the page.

More changes coming to try to make that page more usable.

Also, I've got some ideas for the discussions page that I think will make people happy.  More to come.

Another quick modification to prevent spam:

You only get the "sort by score" box if you're logged in. That way, if a user votes down a spam comment, I can guarantee that comment won't be indexed by a search engine.

Just more justification for signing up, kids!

EDIT - also updated the main page with the top 10 latest comments (rather than top 5), and have also included news post comments.

EDIT 2 - Also...  You'll now jump to the latest post, rather than just the page which contains the latest post.

Posted an update to the main forum page and to the discussions page. I might post another update that'll change the layout of the discussions grid, and I might change one or two little things here and there to unify the look of the thread to the other pages.

UPDATE (2/16):

I've updated the thread page.

I've removed one of the layers of Spam protection, I found that it was getting too agressive.  I might put it back into place at a later time.

Update - I've updated the following:
  • User post count.  There were about 20 users that posted in the NEW forum before I was counting posts.  This new post count should be accurate
  • User badge.  The user badge at the top of every screen will now indicate your new message count, and the number will be red if you have a new message.
  • Mailbox - your mailbox screen has changed to reflect the navigation and colors of the rest of the forum.
